Ruth Roman was born on June 22, 1939 at Lynn Massachusetts. The actress is the eldest child of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold & Abraham Roman. Her father, a carnival barker, died at the age of a tiny girl, requiring her mother to support the family by being waitress or cleaning lady. Ruth went to school in the tenement district of Boston's most deprived. She left the school in the span of two years in order to explore a career in acting. It was not without problems. After obtaining a position in New York as a model for a magazine that dealt with detectives, she had a difficult time trying to find jobs on stage. Her next job was as a "hat check" girl for a nightclub but she quit and returned to Boston. The city of Boston was where she worked during the late night, she was an actor for New England Repertory Company and during the day as an usherette. She graduated from Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she specialized in drama.
